BEST HEADSHOT PHOTOGRAPHERS
I'm a BIG fan of outdoor shots or indoor shots taken using natural light. When a photographer uses natural light, the actor looks exactly like he/she really is which is the purpose of a headshot. There are no frills, no lighting tricks, and the actor looks like a real person - not a mannequin or a supermodel. I know that when I am looking at a professional headshot which was taken in natural light that there is no way the actor will not look like their picture.
If you find that you need a new headshot, I recommend the following three headshot photographers:
Melissa Hamburg Photography Melissa's work is simple and natural. Her photography captures actors as they look in real life which is the of the utmost importance. She is my absolute favorite headshot photographer.
Ryan Jensen Studios You can view testimonials of Ryan's work on his website. His work is truly outstanding. Every time I see a contact sheet of an actor who's just taken headshots with him, almost all of the shots are usable. If you tell Ryan that you were referred by me and you will receive a 20% discount.
Jordan Matter Photography Jordan's photography is very natural and captures the essence of each actor. They look as they do when they walk through the door for an audition and Jordan's style is very unique and beautiful. If you tell Jordan that you were referred by me, you will receive $100 off. A few quick tips: - Never never never choose your own headshot. Let a casting director or friend help choose it. If you attempt to choose your own, you will most likely not be basing your choice on the correct factors.
- Even though it is called a "headshot", be sure to mention to the photgrapher that you want some shots that show a bit of your frame. You want your headshot to give as much information about you as possible. (my 3 fave photographers know this already)
- You should bring a few clothing changes for your photo shoot. Stay away from busy patterns (stripes, crazy logos, big patterns), all white and all black. Avoid flashy jewelery and anything that will cause visual distraction. Stay away from formal wear (suits, formal dresses etc). Keep it casual and neutral. If you check out my 3 fave photographer's websites, you can see good examples of what actors' should wear.
